Fourth Place — Special Projects

For many African-Americans in Winston-Salem and the Atkins community, the title was — and is — a source of pride. At the time, Atkins was an all-Black high school, one of four in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. The district was just beginning to desegregate as the Camels went undefeated and marched to the state title.

The feature was a piece of a series published in March 2019 by the Winston-Salem Journal. It was awarded top-10 recognition by the APSE in its awards contest in C Division — the third-largest category among media outlets across the nation.

Football was only the beginning for West Forsyth Hall of Famer Johnny Stoutamire Jr.

Johnny Stoutamire, 62, had plenty of success throughout his life — and it began at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons. Two jersey retirements and a stint in the NFL were just a few of the highlights. And no one with even a smartphone would know that about the thin, lanky man behind a pair of tortoise-shell eye glasses. If you’re lucky, a Google search may turn up a Whitepages entry and a Pittsburgh Courier All-American team capsule from 1976.

Catman II — Son aims to build on father’s legacy as the biggest Panthers fan in the world

Greg Good Sr. had made his reputation wearing that wig, a wild hairdo that came to a point about a foot above above his head. It was just a portion of a costume that transformed the Winston-Salem native into “Catman” — an icon of Carolina Panthers fandom, who attended nearly every home game in the team’s 25 seasons. But it was the younger Good who was about to embark on his first trek to Bank of America Stadium in the outfit his father made famous.

A wild ride: Fans flock to tradition-rich Bowman Gray Stadium

The adrenaline rush of racing is a recurring sensation both drivers and fans have felt for years, as Bowman Gray Stadium has worked to provide an experience unlike any other short track in the Southeast. Its rowdy crowds, gritty competition and legacy as the oldest running weekly NASCAR-sanctioned race in the country has made the venue in Winston-Salem a premier destination for car lovers of all kinds. Since Bowman Gray held its first race in 1949, that popularity has been preserved, evident in the countless skid marks and tire scraps lining the quarter-mile asphalt track.

A changing landscape: COVID-19 has altered recruiting for highly-sought prospects across the Piedmont Triad

‘It’s changed everything.’ For Division I coaches like App State’s Justin Watts, recruiting in the midst of COVID-19 has been an adjustment

College recruitment hasn’t halted for an array of highly-sought prospects throughout the Piedmont Triad. But the coronavirus has posed its challenges — in particular, the NCAA’s move to impose a dead period on in-person recruiting until the end of May. Of course, these days, the extent of daily interactions between coaches and high school standouts includes video streams, texts, Twitter messages, emails, and phone calls.

The two feature stories, which appeared as a package in the Winston-Salem Journal in April 2020, earned a second-place award in Division F (daily newspapers with a circulation of more than 35,000) from the NCPA.
